The role
Night Porters run hotels overnight, covering reception, late check-ins, in-room service, security checks, the night audit, fire-panel monitoring, and any guest need that arises through the small hours. The role is calm by design but seldom predictable. It demands the judgement of a Concierge, the awareness of a Security Officer, and the warmth of front-of-house when a guest comes down overnight needing assistance.
Who it suits
The role suits independent, workers who are awake and capable through the night, composed in a crisis, and able to switch between admin, service, and security thinking without missing a beat. It is well-suited to experienced hotel staff who prefer nights, and to those building a path into Night Manager and Hotel Operations roles.
A typical shift
Eleven-hour shifts, typically 11pm to 7am or 8pm to 7am with handover. The shift begins with a structured handover from the evening team, followed by the night audit, late arrivals and early departures, property and fire-safety walks, in-room service requests, and any incidents that arise (fire alarms, lockouts, distressed guests, intruders). The shift closes with a full briefing to the morning team.
Requirements & expectations
- Right to work in the UK
- Physical stamina for long, fast shifts
- Reliability — the kitchen depends on the KP showing up
- Willingness to learn kitchen safety and hygiene practice
- Basic English for briefings
